Designers say that, “To add the right emphasis, a light must participate in the room.” Spotlighting a desired area, like a dining table or wet-bar are best done so with Pendant Lights. Quite literally they anchor a living space within the larger room. Pendant lights, are lighting fixtures that hang from the ceiling from any number of different styles of cords, chains or rods.

So, before choosing your fixture, measure the floor-to-ceiling height of your preferred spot. If the light will be mounted above a table (such as in your dining room), measure the table-to-ceiling-height. A good rule of thumb is to leave 7 feet of clearance from the bottom of the fixture to the floor in a living room or open space, 2.5 to 3 feet of room from the bottom of the fixture to the top of a table, or leaving about 1 foot of space between your head and the bottom of the hanging fixture. These are of course guidelines, and it is up to you to consider the space and those who will use it.

The Wiltshire Residence Using Pendant Lighting to Anchor the Living Room

When it comes to choosing the right size and style of over-table Pendant Light, consider the light and your table as an unbreakable pair. That means the look, feel, weight and size of the Pendant Light should complement the dining room table over which it will hang – not the room it will hang in. If your table is long, choose a Pendant Light that can comfortably span it. If your table is round, choose one that matches that shape. Although you don’t want to match your room’s interior, you should still be aware of the effect the Pendant Lighting it will have on said room. To prevent overly harsh, or dim lighting, ask yourself how much light the walls, floors and table will absorb or reflect. Lastly if lighting in general is your only concern and not anchoring a space, perhaps pot lighting is all you need.
