Patkau Architects wins design competition

MILL RUN, Pa.

Patkau Architects of Vancouver has won the first ever design competition for on-site cottages near Fallingwater, considered Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterwork.

Patkau designed six small, efficient and sustainable cottages to blend into the site.

The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy will build the cottages on the grounds of the 2,024-hectare Bear Run Nature Reserve, which surrounds Fallingwater.

Patkau also shared a 2010 Governor General’s Medal in Architecture this year.

GVHBA member KPMG recently released a study, Competitive Alternatives, which examined the business competitiveness of major countries. There were 26 cost components considered, including labour, taxes, real estate and utilities. The study also focused on 41 cities with populations in excess of two million. Vancouver jumped from 21st in 2008 to 5th in 2010. Portland placed 23rd, Seattle 29th and San Francisco 39th. Visit www.competitivealternatives.com for details. Ed Militzer, KPMG’s senior manager of taxation services and a member of the GVHBA Education & Training Committee, says the study “would be of interest to building-product manufacturers operating in various jurisdictions or companies that are part of global ownership or network.”
